Chennai, Oct 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said district administrations were prepared to respond to heavy rainfall, with orange alerts issued for six districts and officials instructed to keep emergency arrangements ready.
Speaking to reporters at the emergency control centre at Ezhilagam in Chennai, the Minister said Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris had been placed under orange alert. Collectors and departmental officials were monitoring conditions and remained ready to take action wherever necessary, he said.
Sengottaiyan said Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district recorded 6.2 cm of rainfall the previous day, while the Nilgiris received 2.3 cm.
According to him, the respective Collectors had reported that rainfall levels remained relatively low in their areas. The government was reviewing the situation daily and taking immediate measures based on reports from the districts, he said. Coordination among departments was central to the administration’s preparations and response to rain-related emergencies.
Referring to an earlier spell of heavy rain in Chennai, Sengottaiyan claimed that the city had received 31 cm of rainfall without major disruption to normal life. Relief measures were undertaken promptly, accumulated rainwater was drained and normal conditions were restored, he said.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had appreciated the work carried out during that spell, the Minister added.
“The Chief Minister’s objective is to ensure that we are prepared to deal with any amount of rainfall,” Sengottaiyan said, outlining the government’s approach to disaster preparedness.
He said monthly departmental reviews had also been conducted to assess preparedness and the progress of work. Activities were being coordinated across departments to ensure that responsibilities were identified and necessary measures implemented.
The Revenue and Disaster Management Department was ready to examine pending requirements and carry out the tasks assigned to it, he said.
Sengottaiyan also referred to what he described as statistical indications of a possible “Super El Niño” change after the first week of November.
He did not elaborate on the source of the assessment or specify its likely implications for Tamil Nadu’s rainfall.
Changes in weather conditions would become clearer subsequently, he said, while stressing the need for continued vigilance.
The Minister said that the Chief Minister was working to protect people from natural disasters through preparedness, coordinated administration and timely intervention across the State.
