Dussehra is being celebrated across most parts of India on Tuesday, with public festivities, Ramlila performances and the burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna.
According to Drik Panchang, the Dashami Tithi begins at 12.50 p.m. on October 20 and ends at 2.11 p.m. on October 21. In New Delhi, the Vijay Muhurat, considered auspicious for Vijayadashami puja and related rituals, will be observed from 1.59 p.m. to 2.45 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ravan Dahan commemorates Lord Ram's victory over Ravana, the king of Lanka, as narrated in the Ramayana. The burning of Ravana's effigy symbolises the triumph of good over evil and righteousness over arrogance. Public celebrations also mark the conclusion of Ramlila performances depicting significant episodes from Lord Ram's life.
The festival also holds significance in the Shakta tradition, as Vijayadashami marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura during Durga Puja. Across traditions, the occasion serves as a reminder to embrace truth, courage, righteousness and the values of justice in everyday life.
