BJP slams Congress over Odisha Bandh, terms it ‘complete failure’

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday termed the 12-hour Odisha Bandh called by the Congress-led INDIA bloc a complete failure, alleging that the people of the state had rejected the shutdown, while the Congress maintained that the bandh received widespread public support.

Odisha BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal said normal life remained largely unaffected across the state despite the bandh call.

“However, the people of Odisha will never forgive the manner in which goons of the Congress and Left parties created terror at some places and intimidated common people. Various videos circulating in the media show how Congress workers stopped and misbehaved with people who were going to hospitals and those who were going to drop their children at school,” Biswal alleged.

He further alleged that even pregnant women were not spared from the behaviour of Congress and INDIA bloc workers, adding that the people of Odisha would respond appropriately.

“The Congress party, which is protesting on the streets with the slogan of saving the Constitution, should clarify under which provision of the Constitution such behaviour has been mentioned,” Biswal said.

Meanwhile, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das claimed that the Odisha Bandh called by the INDIA bloc was a major success and thanked the people of the state and various organisations for extending support.

“I sincerely thank the people of Odisha for their cooperation, support and understanding during today’s Odisha Bandh, observed by the INDIA Bloc across Odisha. I regret the inconvenience caused to citizens and deeply appreciate their patience and solidarity,” Das said in a message.

The 12-hour statewide shutdown was observed by parties of the Congress-led INDIA bloc over four key demands, including the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, repeal of the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026, resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond over alleged errors in textbooks, and immediate relief and compensation for people affected by recent floods.

Das described the bandh as a democratic protest reflecting the INDIA bloc’s concerns over protecting voting rights, Odisha’s resources, and ensuring adequate relief and assistance for flood-affected people.

“Our commitment remains to pursue these demands through peaceful, democratic and constitutional means, always keeping the rights, dignity and interests of the people of Odisha at the forefront,” he added.
