Assam catching up fast in industrialisation, says CM Sarma as Rs 250-crore tile plant inaugurated

Guwahati, Oct 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam is rapidly catching up in industrialisation after missing out on earlier opportunities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday while inaugurating a tile manufacturing plant in Sonitpur district.

Addressing the programme, CM Sarma said Assam had "missed the bus of industrialization" in the past but had been making rapid progress since 2014.

"Since 2014, it's (Assam) been catching up fast," the Chief Minister said, highlighting the growing pace of industrial development in the state.

The newly inaugurated tile manufacturing facility, located around 200 km from Guwahati, is the first of its kind in eastern India, according to Chief Minister Sarma.

He said the plant would help reduce the region's dependence on tiles brought in from other parts of the country and create a manufacturing base closer to the eastern market.

"All this while, the entire region has been importing tiles but this stops today," CM Sarma added while emphasising the significance of the new facility.

The plant has been established at an investment of around Rs 250 crore and is expected to cater to the tile requirements of Assam as well as other markets across eastern India.

The project is also projected to generate around 1,300 employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local economy and creating livelihood opportunities for people in the region.

Chief Minister Sarma said the establishment of the manufacturing facility reflected the changing industrial landscape of Assam and the growing opportunities available to investors in the state.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly highlighted industrialisation and private investment as key pillars of Assam's economic growth strategy, with the state government seeking to attract manufacturing projects and create employment opportunities for the state's growing workforce.

The Sonitpur facility is expected to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities while potentially supporting ancillary businesses, logistics, transportation and other related economic activities.

Chief Minister Sarma urged people to take advantage of the opportunities emerging from Assam's industrial expansion.

"Assam is fast moving ahead, make sure you don't miss the opportunities on offer," he said.

The state government has been positioning Assam as an emerging industrial and investment destination in the Northeast, citing improved connectivity, infrastructure development and growing market access as factors supporting industrial expansion.

The latest project is expected to add further momentum to these efforts while reducing dependence on supplies from outside the region.
