Johansson stars as a single-mother detective whose investigation begins with a series of murders connected to a satanic serial killer from the past. But what initially looks like a terrifying criminal case soon becomes something much more sinister when her own son becomes the target of a demonic possession. The teaser gives only fragments of this nightmare, including Johansson gripping a flashlight as she navigates a pitch-black corridor, while another disturbing shot shows a frightened boy lying on the floor.
And then things get seriously creepy. The teaser flashes a silhouetted figure hanging upside down before cutting to an eerie church setting, leaving audiences with more questions than answers. Who or what is behind the disturbing events? What connects the murders to the supernatural threat? And just how far will Johansson’s detective have to go to save her son? The tiny glimpse suggests that Flanagan is keeping the biggest horrors hidden for now, making Friday’s full trailer even more intriguing.
The Exorcist: Martyrs marks the seventh film in the long-running Exorcist franchise, but having Mike Flanagan at the helm gives this new entry a particularly interesting edge. The filmmaker, known for his atmospheric approach to horror and stories built around psychological tension, is writing and directing the film. Rather than relying solely on jump scares, the early footage suggests a darker mystery involving faith, family, murder and something genuinely supernatural lurking beneath the surface.
Johansson leads an impressive ensemble that includes Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jacobi Jupe, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak and Carla Gugino. The film is produced by Jason Blum through Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, alongside David Robinson through Morgan Creek Entertainment and Flanagan through Red Room Pictures. With that combination of talent behind and in front of the camera, expectations are already high for this new descent into demonic horror.
The official teaser has promised the full trailer this Friday, while The Exorcist: Martyrs is set to hit cinemas on March 12, 2027. For now, there is only a flashlight, a dark corridor, a terrified child and the unmistakable feeling that something very wrong is waiting in the shadows. If those 15 seconds are any indication, Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs could have plenty of nightmares in store — and Scarlett Johansson’s detective may be facing a horror far more dangerous than anything she has encountered before.
