Spanish PM Petro Sanchez calls for snap election on Nov 29

Madrid, Oct 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday called for an early General Election for November 29, after Congress did not pass two housing decrees presented by his government.

The lower house voted against the measures put forward by the government on Friday, despite negotiations made for gaining enough support. The decrees were part of the Spanish government's response to the housing crisis, Euro News reported.

Sanchez's announcement comes after he held talks with ministers and senior figures in his Socialist Party (PSOE) over the weekend, before deciding whether to continue government until the end of the parliamentary term or call for early polls.

While sharing a video from his address on X, Sanchez stated, "Facing their penthouses, their cuts, and their servility to the elites, our commitment to the people: affordable housing, public services, and social rights. Spain must continue advancing, and for that, we need citizens to bolster our strength in Parliament. It's time to mobilise. It's time to fight. On November 29, we're going to make history. Again."

Sanchez's decision comes after his coalition government faced a difficult few months as it has struggled to gather support in Congress amid corruption cases involving people close to the PSOE and the migration crisis in Ceuta.

In July, thousands of migrants crossed the border from Morocco into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta. The scale of the arrival of migrants resulted in the Spanish government deploying additional resources and, weeks later, declaring a "situation of interest for national security" for the first time in Spain's democratic era. The conservative People's Party (PP) and far-right Vox have accused the Sanchez-led government of acting too slowly and raised questions over its policy towards Morocco, Euro News reported.

Spanish government has also been facing pressure as people in Sanchez's political circle have been involved in several corruption cases and other legal proceedings. Furthermore, the Spanish government has been facing difficulty in managing its fragile parliamentary majority. The government has been negotiating the legislative agenda vote by vote with its partners and has faced several defeats in Congress.
