Bhubaneswar, Oct 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday attended a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss ways to resolve the long-pending Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The meeting was also attended by Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, and senior officials of both states and the Union government.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Majhi said the discussions were cordial and positive.
The Chief Minister said both Odisha and Chhattisgarh were gradually moving closer to a resolution of the Mahanadi water-sharing dispute.
Expressing hope that a final framework would be released soon, Chief Minister Majhi said a solution to the dispute would be found while safeguarding both states' interests.
“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the development of the country and the states is being accelerated through double-engine governments, the path for resolving disputes between states is also opening up,” Majhi said.
The Chief Minister also said the resolution would serve as a model dispute-resolution mechanism for other states.
“Mahanadi is our lifeline. Mahanadi is the livelihood of crores of people in Odisha,” he noted.
Majhi said he raised various issues during the meeting, including irrigation, flood control, hydropower generation, drinking water supply and environmental concerns.
He emphasised the need to ensure that Odisha receives an adequate quantity of water.
“After our double-engine government came to power, the process of resolving the Mahanadi issue in both Chhattisgarh and Odisha has accelerated. Alongside the legal process, administrative and political resolution pathways have also expanded,” Majhi added.
Providing details of the efforts made so far, Majhi said the two Chief Ministers held discussions in July and August 2025.
Since then, the Chief Secretaries and Water Resources Secretaries of both states have held several meetings.
A meeting was also held in July this year under the chairmanship of the Union Minister of Jal Shakti in the presence of the two Chief Ministers.
“In accordance with the decision taken at the July meeting this year, various issues, data and information regarding the requirements of both states are being provided to the Central Water Commission,” he said.
Majhi added that the meeting had provisionally decided to find a path to resolution within three months, and noted that two months had already passed.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the overall progress.
He also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for personally taking charge of efforts to resolve the Mahanadi issue and for working toward a solution.
