Jagan urges CM Naidu to bring Constitutional amendment for 34 pc Backward Classes quota

Amaravati, Oct 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday accused Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of deceiving Backward Classes (BCs) and demanded that he use his influence at the Centre to bring a Constitutional amendment to ensure 34 per cent reservation for BCs in local bodies.

The former Chief Minister criticised Chandrababu Naidu after the Andhra Pradesh High Court struck down two government orders providing 34 per cent reservation to BCs.

He demanded that Chandrababu Naidu apologise to the BC community.

“If you are genuinely committed to providing 34 per cent reservation to BCs, it can be achieved only through constitutionally valid measures,” Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said.

He urged Chandrababu Naidu, as a partner in the government at the Centre, to use his influence, persuade the Central government and bring the necessary legal amendment to ensure 34 per cent reservation for BCs.

Questioning the Chief Minister’s intentions, the YSRCP chief alleged that the move was politically motivated.

“How long will you continue this politics of deception against the BCs? How much longer do you intend to mislead and deceive them?” he asked.

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that Chandrababu Naidu knew the reservation mechanism would not withstand judicial scrutiny in light of previous Supreme Court judgments, and questioned whether the exercise over the past 44 days was a political drama.

Referring to the High Court order, he said Chandrababu Naidu should apologise to BCs and publicly express regret.

The former Chief Minister said Chandrababu Naidu should have persuaded the coalition government at the Centre to create a constitutionally and legally sustainable framework because, without such a mechanism, the reservations could not be implemented.

He questioned whether Chandrababu Naidu had raised the matter with the Central government or used his party’s representation in the Union government to press the issue.

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that issuing legally unsustainable government orders without pursuing constitutional remedies misled BC communities.

He further questioned whether the government was using BCs for political gain.

The YSRCP chief claimed that the previous YSRCP government had worked to uplift BCs, Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and minorities economically, socially and politically.

He said that in August 2019, his government enacted a law providing 50 per cent reservation for BCs, SCs, STs and minorities in nominated posts and contract works in corporations, boards, societies and committees across the state.

According to him, many BCs, SCs, STs and women who obtained such positions became politically empowered and participated more actively in public life.

He asserted that the YSRCP government created leadership opportunities for these communities on an unprecedented scale.
