Jabalpur, Sep 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) Fed up with what it described as a deteriorating law-and-order situation, rising crime and alleged leniency towards criminals in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, the Youth Congress staged a massive protest and laid siege to the Superintendent of Police's office on Tuesday.
Led by state Youth Congress president Yash Ghanghoria, hundreds of activists marched from Dhamapur Chowk towards the SP office, raising slogans against the police administration and demanding immediate action against criminals and the arrest of absconding accused.
The protest was held against the backdrop of several criminal incidents reported in Jabalpur in recent months, including murders, robberies and stabbing cases.
The protesters also alleged that the illegal trade in liquor, gambling and narcotics was growing in the city, adding to public concerns over safety.
Police had deployed heavy security and erected barricades outside the SP office to prevent the protesters from entering the premises.
The situation turned tense when activists attempted to push through the barricades, resulting in a scuffle between protesters and police personnel. Police later used water cannons to disperse the protesters. Several activists were detained after the demonstration, which continued for around an hour.
Ghanghoria alleged that the police administration had failed to effectively curb crime and that ordinary people were struggling to get their complaints addressed at police stations. "Murders and robberies are happening frequently in Jabalpur, while the police administration has failed to control crime. The illegal trade of liquor, gambling and narcotics is also increasing," Ghanghoria said.
He further alleged that a nexus between criminals and sections of the police force was contributing to the worsening law-and-order situation. "People go to police stations with their grievances, but instead of getting their complaints addressed, they are made to run from one place to another. If the law-and-order situation does not improve, the Youth Congress will launch a bigger agitation," he said.
The protesters also cited incidents of bank robberies, murders, stabbings and the killing of a young woman at a restaurant while questioning the police response to crime in the city, popularly known as the Sanskardhani.
The Youth Congress demanded increased police patrolling in sensitive areas, strict action against criminals and the arrest of those wanted in pending cases.
The protest ended after police detained several activists and brought the situation under control. The Youth Congress warned that it would intensify its agitation if the administration failed to address its concerns over public safety and crime in Jabalpur.
