Kolkata, Sep 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a proclaimed offender in connection with a murder case linked to the post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election.
According to a press statement issued by the CBI, the arrested person is Jharna Mistry, wife of Sanjay Mistry, who is also a co-accused in the same case. The CBI arrested her in the Ghoshpara area of Santoshpur in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
“The accused was at large since registration of the FIR in 2021, and she never joined the investigation/trial in this post-poll violence case. The CBI had declared a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for her arrest,” the statement read.
In compliance with the Calcutta High Court's order on August 19, 2021, the CBI began investigating post-poll violence cases in West Bengal, including this one.
In this case, the CBI began its probe after registering an FIR with Jagatdal Police Station in North 24 Parganas district. The FIR was based on a complaint by the mother of Sova Rani Mondal, who was allegedly killed by the accused during the violence.
After a detailed investigation, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet against 13 accused persons, including prime accused Jharna Mistry.
Since the FIR was registered, Jharna Mistry went absconding and evaded trial. Even after a district court at Barrackpore declared her a proclaimed offender, she remained at large.
She was produced before the Competent Court at Barrackpore on Tuesday.
To recall, after the results of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, in which Trinamool Congress secured power for the third consecutive term with a thumping majority, reports of severe post-poll violence surfaced across the state.
In many of these cases, Trinamool leaders and activists were accused of carrying out violence. Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were killed or injured, and many were forced to leave their homes for extended periods.
