Dharma Productions Announces R.N. Kao Biopic

Dharma Productions has just announced an ambitious new film based on R.N. Kao, the founding chief of India's Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). The production house unveiled a short promo announcing the project, which will explore the life and work of one of India's most significant intelligence officers. The announcement comes on the 58th anniversary of R&AW, adding a symbolic touch to the reveal.

Sharing the promo on social media, Dharma Productions wrote, “He built the invisible…but history remembers his impact.” The production house announced that the upcoming film will focus on R.N. Kao, who played a central role in establishing the intelligence organisation and shaping its early operations. The project is being mounted in collaboration with Leo Media Collective, with the makers promising to take audiences into a world that largely operated away from the public eye.

The film is based on Nitin Gokhale's 2019 book R.N. Kao: Gentleman Spymaster and is expected to cover an important period of Kao's career, from the 1950s through 1971. That timeline includes the creation of R&AW in 1968 and the agency's early years, a period that coincided with major geopolitical developments in South Asia. The story will therefore bring together elements of biography, intelligence history and political drama.

The announcement promo, which runs for around 29 seconds, keeps things deliberately restrained. Instead of revealing elaborate action sequences, it focuses on R.N. Marijke DeSouza and Dimple Mathias are also associated with the film, with journalist and author Nitin Gokhale serving as the source for the story through his book.

Interestingly, the makers have already locked a date far into the future. The R.N. Kao biopic is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on August 11, 2028, a date that will coincide with the 60th anniversary year of R&AW. The decision to announce the project so early indicates the scale of the production and gives audiences a long runway to discover more about the film, its cast and its portrayal of Kao.

The project arrives at a time when stories inspired by India's intelligence history have found a strong place in mainstream cinema and streaming. However, the R.N.
