Rakesh Dang on Welcome To The Jungle: ‘The Scariest Scenario Is When the Shoot Is on Schedule but You’ve Run Out of Money’

For a producer, putting together a mega-starrer comes with its own set of pressures, but according to entrepreneur-turned-producer Rakesh Dang, nothing is more frightening than watching a film move ahead on schedule while the money runs out. Following the success of his first major production venture, Welcome To The Jungle, the CA-turned-producer opened up about the financial challenges of backing a large-scale Bollywood film, the realities of working with an experienced team and why producing a film is often more stressful than funny.

When asked whether the biggest fear was the superstar actor, the massive budget or something else, Dang had a very clear answer. “Out of those three, the scariest scenario is when the shoot is on schedule but you’ve run out of money. That is the most terrifying part. Nothing else is scarier than that,” he said. The admission offers a glimpse into the pressure involved in keeping a big-budget production moving, where schedules, star dates and multiple departments have to work in sync.

The producer was also asked about the funniest part of being a producer and whether there were moments when he could simply laugh at the chaos. Dang admitted that producers may have a slightly different definition of humour. “Well, you can laugh at yourself. You can smile and think, ‘Why did I take this on?’—and yet, you’re ready to do it all over again. That’s the funniest part. Otherwise, it’s mostly just tension.” When asked if there was any particular incident from his journey that made him think, ‘Wow, things like this happen too,’ he added, “I don't think there’s much that’s actually funny for a producer; it’s mostly just stress.”

Talking about his experience on Welcome To The Jungle, Dang also explained why he chose not to interfere in areas that were being handled by the film’s experienced creative team. “Well, if it’s my story, I might feel that I should check whether what I wrote is actually making it to the screen or not. Of course, that becomes the director's prerogative, but still—if you’ve written it, you generally want to ensure it turns out well,” he said. Since he had not written the script for Welcome To The Jungle, he felt there was no reason to interfere. “I don't have a habit of interfering—like, ‘It's your job, but I'm going to meddle in it.’ I enjoy focusing on my own work. You know? Everything was going smoothly anyway. There were such experienced people involved—Akshay, Ahmed, Firoz Nadiadwala. I mean, there were experienced people steering the film. So, I felt that since it was in safe hands, why should I interfere?”

For Dang, who had previously been involved financially in films but was fully involved in this major venture, the biggest challenge was ultimately arranging the finances. “For me, the main challenge was arranging the finances. Right. As for the other challenges—like securing dates and such—Firoz Nadiadwala and Ahmed handled those. I didn't face any other issues because, as I told you, I don't make a habit of meddling in others' work. They were doing their jobs. My job was to ensure the film ran smoothly, that the money came in, and that people got paid on time,” he explained. Reflecting on the overall experience, he added, “As for the achievement—well, the future will tell what we ultimately gain from it. And the challenge was definitely significant; it was a major financial undertaking, and naturally, you feel scared.”

Having transitioned from being a Chartered Accountant to the Hindi film industry, Rakesh Dang has been associated with projects including The Diplomat and Welcome To The Jungle, apart from Mere Naina Tere Naina and Kokh. After Welcome To The Jungle, the producer has also hinted at exploring a project based on his own story, this time taking on the writing responsibilities as well. For Dang, the journey from financing films to taking a more hands-on creative role appears to be the next chapter in an already unconventional move from the world of finance to Bollywood production.
