Agartala, Sep 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Three Bangladeshi women and an alleged Indian human trafficker were arrested near Agartala airport on Friday for allegedly entering Tripura illegally, police said.
The arrests were made by a team of Agartala Airport police station based on specific information about the movement of some suspected Bangladeshi nationals near the airport.
In-charge of Airport police station, Sub-Inspector Shyamal Debnath, said the three women, all residents of Bangladesh's Khulna district, and the alleged Indian tout, identified as Mazarul Islam, a resident of Jatrapur police station area in Sepahijala district, were detained during the operation.
During preliminary interrogation, the women allegedly told police that they had entered Indian territory through the Sonamura border with the assistance of Islam and were planning to board a flight to Guwahati.
Police also recovered air tickets from the possession of the alleged tout.
According to Debnath, the three women entered India two days ago without valid travel documents and were subsequently planning to travel to Guwahati.
The four arrested persons were produced before a local court on Friday, with police seeking five days' remand for further investigation.
Debnath said the investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances under which the Bangladeshi nationals entered India and identify other persons who may have assisted them.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Passports Act, the Foreigners Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he added.
The police officer said that efforts were also underway to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected human trafficking network involved in facilitating the illegal entry and movement of Bangladeshi nationals into Tripura.
In recent months, security forces and police have arrested several Bangladeshi nationals, Rohingyas and suspected human traffickers from different parts of Tripura, including areas along the India-Bangladesh border and Agartala Railway Station.
Tripura, which has an 856 km border with Bangladesh, is surrounded on three sides by the neighbouring country, making the Northeastern state very vulnerable and sensitive to cross-border migration issues.
Except for some patches, most of the frontier had been fenced to prevent smuggling, trans-border crimes, cross-border illegal movements by infiltrators and inimical elements.
