Haridwar, Sep 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Dharmender, a local, who helped Surendra Koli land a job at a tea stall in Uttarakhand's Haridwar, said on Friday that he was not aware that the latter had been an accused in the sensational Nithari killings case.
This comes hours after Surendra Koli committed suicide by hanging himself. His body was found at the tea stall.
Speaking to IANS, Dharmender said: "I met him 15 days back when he begged me for a job. He had told me that he knows cooking, so I arranged for him to work at the tea stall at my guarantee...Only today I got to know that he is Surendra Koli and was related to the Nithari case."
About whether Koli was asked for any identification proof, he said: "Just yesterday, I had asked him for his Aadhar card for verification, to which he said that he did not have it here but would get it. So, I had given my Aadhar card to the owner (of the tea stall) and asked him to keep him here on my guarantee."
"Today morning I saw customers were sitting outside the shop but the shutter was closed. As soon as I attempted to knock, I realised that the shutter was already open. Upon opening it, I saw that he (Surendra Koli) had hanged himself."
Dharmender said that Koli was under depression.
"He (Surendra Koli) was also suffering from low sugar," he added.
Meanwhile, Shishupal Singh Negi, Circle Officer (Haridwar City), said that Koli's family has been informed about the incident and investigation is underway.
Talking to IANS, Negi said: "Surendra Koli has been frequently in the news as he was an accused in the Nithari case, which is why people recognised him. His family members have been informed and should be arriving soon. An investigation is underway, and any further updates will be shared as facts emerge."
"Whether he (Surendra Koli) was facing trouble at home will only be known once his family arrives. For now, it remains a matter of investigation," he added.
In November last year, Koli, who was given the sobriquet "Butcher of Nithari", was set free by the Supreme Court, which allowed his curative petition, giving a formal closure to a saga of botched-up probe and media trial built on theories of cannibalism.
The 2006 Nithari killings captured public attention after the disappearance of minors from the village was linked to the discovery of human remains in a drain outside Moninder Singh Pandher's home in Noida's Sector-31, which became infamous as "House of Horrors".
