Mysuru, Sep 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Tight security arrangements were put in place in T. Narasipur town of Mysuru district on Monday following a controversial remark by a police inspector, warning youths against taking a Ganesh procession in front of a mosque, and with the issue taking a political turn after the BJP demanded action against him.
Police Inspector Dhananjay, attached to the T. Narasipur police station, came under criticism after a purported video of him warning youths went viral on social media.
In the video, the Inspector is purportedly heard warning youths against creating problems during the installation, celebration and procession of the Ganesh idol. He allegedly said that he would not spare those who created trouble while taking the procession in front of the mosque and questioned their conduct when they reached the area around the mosque.
The video triggered strong reactions from BJP leaders and Hindu activists, who accused the Congress government of appeasement and demanded action against the Inspector. The BJP sought either his suspension or transfer, arguing that the remarks had hurt the sentiments of Hindus ahead of the Ganesh festival.
The BJP, led by Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka, staged a protest in T. Narasipur on Sunday, and all leaders brought Ganesh idols to the front of the police station while demanding action against Inspector Dhananjay. Other prominent BJP leaders also participated in the protest.
However, the state government has so far refused to initiate action against the Inspector. The controversy nevertheless prompted the government to clarify that there would be no restriction on the Ganesh procession and that devotees would be allowed to take the procession in front of the mosque.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar clarified that Ganesh processions could be taken anywhere and appealed to people to celebrate the festival peacefully, maintaining communal harmony.
The issue also triggered a war of words between former BJP MP Pratap Simha and the state Home Minister Priyank Kharge.
Reacting to the purported video, Simha warned Inspector Dhananjay against exceeding his limits and said he would enter the police station if the officer attempted to prevent the Ganesh procession.
Kharge hit back at Simha, comparing him to a "street goonda" and warning that he would be sent to jail if he indulged in any "misadventure". Simha later said he was not afraid of the consequences.
The BJP has maintained that merely allowing the procession was not enough and continued to demand disciplinary action against the Inspector, questioning whether he should be suspended or transferred.
Meanwhile, police have intensified security arrangements across T. Narasipur in view of the sensitive situation. Personnel have been deployed at key locations and along the procession route, while officials are closely monitoring developments to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the maintenance of law and order.
