Delhi GST dept seizes goods worth Rs 5 crore at Nizamuddin Railway Station

New Delhi, Sep 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, in coordination with railway officials, seized a consignment of 50 tonnes of goods, including copper scrap, worth nearly Rs 5 crore at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, an official said on Saturday.

The GST department had received a tip-off that some goods were being transported on a train without mandatory documents such as invoices and e-way bills, said an official statement.

Acting on the information, the department carried out the operation in coordination with railway officials.

According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government’s aim is not just to take action but to put in place an effective system that ensures businesses operate transparently and every due tax is collected.

The consignment had arrived at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station on a train that originated in Renigunta, Andhra Pradesh. During the inspection, officials seized around 25 tonnes of copper scrap, estimated to be worth Rs 3 crore, the statement said.

In addition, around 25 tonnes of mixed scrap, clothing and other goods were found, with an estimated value of around Rs 2 crore. The total estimated value of the seized goods is around Rs 5 crore, it said.

The seized goods were not accompanied by the required invoices and e-way bills. The department is now conducting a detailed verification of the goods and the documents associated with them. It is also examining statutory compliance related to the transportation of goods under the GST law.

According to the department, the action is an important step towards strengthening surveillance of goods transported through the railway network, in addition to road transport.

Efforts are being stepped up to identify cases involving unaccounted goods, irregular documentation and possible tax evasion by increasing coordination with railway officials and monitoring railway routes more closely, said the statement.
