Hyderabad, Sep 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Women MLAs belonging to BRS on Friday approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) in New Delhi, alleging that Telangana Police assaulted and humiliated them while preventing them from entering the State Assembly.
They sought the intervention of the national commissions over alleged violations of their rights as elected representatives and the conduct of police personnel.
A delegation of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs, MLCs and MPs and senior leaders separately met NHRC Member Vijaya Bharathi and NCW Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar and submitted representations detailing the incident.
According to a BRS release in Hyderabad, former ministers and BRS MLAs P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy apprised the commissions of the alleged police action at the Assembly entrance. They alleged that they were manhandled despite being women legislators and accused the police of preventing elected representatives from entering the House.
Sabitha Indra Reddy alleged that she was physically restrained and that police personnel pulled her by the hair and pressed her throat during the incident. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy alleged that her saree was pulled, causing her severe humiliation. The BRS leaders questioned the authority of the police to prevent elected legislators from entering the Assembly premises.
The BRS leaders also alleged that despite lodging a complaint with Telangana Police, no action had been taken so far. They pointed out that more than 100 hours had passed since the incident, yet no FIR had been registered against those allegedly responsible for assaulting the women MLAs, while cases were instead registered against BRS legislators.
The leaders lashed out at the Telangana government for remaining silent over the alleged police excesses and demanded accountability.
The BRS delegation urged the NHRC and NCW to order a comprehensive and impartial inquiry, ensure preservation of all CCTV footage from the Assembly premises, identify those responsible and initiate appropriate action. They also sought protection for the dignity and rights of women legislators.
Former Ministers G. Jagadish Reddy and Satyavathi Rathod, MLC Surabhi Vani Devi, MLAs Kova Lakshmi and Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra and BRS leaders Soma Bharat Kumar and others were part of the delegation.
