Gandhinagar, Sep 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and all 182 MLAs came together at the Secretariat Complex in Gandhinagar on Wednesday to participate in a tree plantation drive under the third phase of the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
The plantation programme was organised as part of ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0’, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote environmental conservation and increase green cover.
Gujarat had launched the state’s third-phase campaign in June this year.
Deputy Speaker Purnesh Modi, Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia and other members of the Council of Ministers also participated in the drive, with legislators planting trees within the Legislative Assembly premises.
Speaking on the occasion, Assembly Speaker Chaudhary said the campaign was gaining support as a people’s movement and that the participation of ministers and legislators at the Assembly complex would help convey the message of environmental conservation to citizens.
"The trees planted on Wednesday would remain as an enduring memory within the Assembly premises and, in the years ahead, would provide shelter and shade to animals and birds," he said.
Chaudhary also underlined the importance of trees in providing oxygen and clean air and contributing to rainfall.
Referring to future generations, including Gen Z, Alpha, Beta and Gamma, he said: "All generations would continue to require oxygen to sustain life and people across Gujarat must participate actively in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0’ campaign."
The trees planted during the programme were identified with the names of individual MLAs.
The species included Peepal, Kusum, Kadam, Arjun, Sadad, Tamarind, Sisoo, Jamun, Silk Cotton, Desi Almond, Borsali, Kachnar and Kigelia.
The plantation drive was held in front of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Secretariat.
The organisers said the location was intended to reinforce the message of environmental protection and encourage greater public participation in tree plantation.
The event brought together the state’s elected representatives for a collective plantation activity as Gujarat continues its participation in the third phase of the national campaign.
