The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Dr. Badr Abdelatty. From the Italian side, Italian Ambassador to Egypt Agostino Palese, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, Chief of the Foreign Minister Cabinet Ambassador Francesco Genuardi, and Deputy Secretary-General / Director General for Political Affairs and International Security Minister Plenipotentiary Cecilia Piccioni were present.
The Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said Mr. Tajani conveyed the greetings of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to President El-Sisi. The President emphasized the key, longstanding ties Egypt and Italy share and asked for his greetings be conveyed to the Italian Prime Minister, expressing his appreciation for the progress made in bilateral ties.
A letter addressed from the President to the Italian Prime Minister was handed to the Italian side, congratulating her government on being the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic since the end of World War II. The letter noted the remarkable development witnessed in bilateral relations across various fields and invited the Prime Minister to visit Egypt to continue coordination and consultation on issues of mutual interest.
President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of implementing the outcomes of the Egyptian-Italian Joint Committee to enhance cooperation in trade and investment, and further develop ongoing cooperation in energy, education, maritime transport, agriculture, and tourism. Mr. Tajani affirmed Italy’s interest in solidifying and expanding cooperation with Egypt to serve mutual interests, while maintaining coordination to address the issue of illegal migration.
The meeting covered both regional and international developments. Mr.Tajani listened to President El-Sisi’s view on ways to contain regional tensions linked to the Iranian war and Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tension in the Middle East and contain its repercussions on regional security and stability. Mr. Tajani expressed Italy’s appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to restore regional stability an affirmed that Italy looked forward to continuing political consultations with Egypt to achieve peaceful settlements to regional crises, thereby fostering peace and prosperity in the region.
The President emphasized the vital importance of the Nile River issue to Egypt, given that it is the country's primary lifeline and a matter of national security, stressing Egypt's legitimate right to safeguard its water and food security and developmental interests. The President also underscored Egypt's categorical rejection of any unilateral actions affecting the river's course and the necessity of full compliance with the rules of international law, including the avoidance of causing harm.
The meeting also addressed developments in the Horn of Africa. There was alignment on the importance of joint coordination to support its security and stability, while emphasizing respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its countries. Furthermore, the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation in international maritime corridors was underscored, as was the strategic importance of the Red Sea to Egyptian national security.
President El-Sisi affirmed that ensuring Red Sea security is the exclusive responsibility of the littoral states, while rejecting any attempts to destabilize the region or push it toward militarization and internationalization.
