Guwahati, Sep 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday began a two-day brainstorming session with the state's senior police officials to review the law and order situation and discuss key challenges confronting the police force, with a special focus on the fight against drugs and prevention of crimes against women and children.
The conference of Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) is being held at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon in the Golaghat district.
CM Sarma is scheduled to attend the conference on September 2 and 3 as part of his visit to the district. Taking to social media, the Chief Minister said the two-day session had just begun and that the discussions would focus on Assam's law and order scenario, particularly the government's efforts to combat the drug menace and prevent crimes against women and children.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of an intensified anti-drug campaign in Assam, with the state government repeatedly emphasising the need to dismantle drug trafficking networks and strengthen enforcement.
CM Sarma had recently said that drugs worth around Rs 300 crore were destroyed during the first 100 days of the present government, while a separate 10-day crackdown resulted in seizures valued at Rs 472 crore.
The Chief Minister has also stressed the need for a stronger and professionally equipped police force to deal with organised crime and emerging law and order challenges.
Earlier on Wednesday, CM Sarma attended the passing-out parade of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 371 constables of the communication branch at the LBPA.
The newly trained personnel formally joined the police force after completing their training.
The SSP conference is expected to review policing strategies at the district level and identify areas requiring greater coordination and focused intervention. Issues concerning the safety of women and children, prevention of crime, drug trafficking and overall maintenance of law and order are likely to remain central to the deliberations.
The Assam Police have also expanded their public-facing initiatives, including dedicated resources for women's rights, child rights, cybercrime and community policing. The discussions are expected to conclude with greater emphasis on coordinated policing, faster response mechanisms and stronger preventive measures to improve public safety across Assam.
