Meghalaya BJP keeps door open amid reports of nine UDP MLAs eyeing switch

Shillong, Aug 31 (SocialNews.XYZ) Meghalaya BJP leader and state Minister Sanbor Shullai has neither confirmed nor denied reports that nine MLAs of the regional outfit United Democratic Party (UDP) are considering joining the BJP, saying the political picture would become clear with time.

Responding to questions about the reported move, Shullai said the BJP had been reaching out to leaders across political parties and would welcome those willing to join the saffron party. “We have tried our best to talk and make people understand. I have hope and time will tell,” Shullai said.

The BJP leader made it clear that the party's doors remained open for political leaders seeking to join the organisation. “Our doors are open 24 hours for MLAs, MDCs, leaders of different political parties, volunteers, social organisation leaders and members of the public,” he said.

Shullai also confirmed that the BJP was engaged in discussions with leaders from various political parties, though he did not disclose their identities or indicate whether any formal decision had been taken.

“We are talking to other parties as well. Whenever we meet, sit together or speak over the phone, we have started discussions with many people. We will continue to talk and make people understand,” he said.

His remarks come amid reports of a possible political realignment involving UDP legislators, potentially adding another layer to Meghalaya's evolving electoral landscape.

Shullai further claimed that the BJP's support base was expanding steadily across the state, citing its growing presence in areas including Mawlai and his Laban constituency.

According to him, people from different communities were increasingly receptive to the BJP, reflecting what he described as a shift in political perceptions. He attributed the growing acceptance to the party's focus on development and welfare, particularly measures aimed at poorer sections and unemployed youth.

“If you are with the BJP, there are many benefits when it comes to development and helping the poor and unemployed youth,” Shullai said, while thanking people for what he termed the increasing acceptance of the BJP.

The reported possibility of UDP MLAs switching sides, if it materialises, could have significant implications for Meghalaya's political equations ahead of the next Assembly elections.
