Taapsee Pannu On Gandhari Kanika Dhillon Had Written Such A Strong Character For Me

Taapsee Pannu is stepping into one of the most emotionally demanding roles of her career with Gandhari, and according to the actress, a big part of the challenge was already taken care of before she even arrived on set. The actor credits writer and producer Kanika Dhillon for creating a character so strong and layered that her responsibility was simply to bring those words alive on screen.

Talking about her role, Taapsee said, "Kanika-ji had written such a strong character for me, so my job was actually quite simple: I just had to perform the character as written—or hopefully, make it even better. The tasks of imagining how to relate this character to Gandhari, deciding which aspects to incorporate, and figuring out what new elements to add—thankfully, those aren't my responsibilities; they belong to the writer."

Taapsee added, "I’m very happy to have had such a talented writer who handled all that groundwork, allowing me to simply focus on the performance and bring it to the audience." Her words underline the creative partnership at the heart of Gandhari, where Dhillon's writing and Taapsee's performance come together to reimagine the essence of a mythological figure through a contemporary action thriller.

The film takes inspiration from Gandhari of the Mahabharata, but it does not attempt to recreate the epic on screen. Instead, Kanika Dhillon has imagined what the emotional core of Gandhari could look like in the present day. The result is a mother pushed into a modern-day Kurukshetra after her young daughter disappears.

Taapsee's character begins the film as a mother whose life is shattered when she loses her child at a busy railway station. A violent attack then leaves her unable to see for a period of time, adding another devastating layer to an already unimaginable situation. Her journey from grief to determination becomes the driving force of the film.

This gives Taapsee's performance two dramatically different shades. At first, her character experiences the world with her vision intact. Then everything changes. Losing her sight forces her to navigate fear, vulnerability and uncertainty while still trying to find her daughter and confront the people responsible.

For Taapsee, portraying that transition required far more than simply changing her expressions. The team worked with visually challenged individuals to understand the different forms of visual impairment and how they affect movement and perception. "We consulted a visually challenged individual to learn about the range of movement, as well as what is visible and what isn't," she explained.

The actress also underwent training to understand everyday physical details, from walking to using a cane. She revealed that the filmmakers even designed portions of the camera work around the character's perspective, allowing audiences to experience aspects of her altered visual world along with her.

"There are varying degrees of visual impairment; not everyone experiences blindness at the same level," Taapsee explained, adding that the team also studied the possibility of recovery and what aspects of vision might improve or remain affected.

That attention to detail appears to be crucial to Gandhari because the character's physical transformation is directly connected to her emotional journey. She is not simply a woman who loses her vision; she is a mother who must continue fighting despite suddenly losing one of the most basic tools with which she understands the world.

And that is perhaps where Kanika Dhillon's writing becomes most important. By giving Taapsee a character whose physical vulnerability exists alongside extraordinary emotional strength, Gandhari creates room for a performance that can move between tenderness, fear, anger and sheer determination.

Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, Gandhari also stars Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam and Swastika Mukherjee. Set in the fictional town of Joypurra, the film plunges its characters into a world of child trafficking, old legends, behrupiyas and hidden dangers.

With Taapsee trusting Kanika's writing and the filmmakers investing heavily in the character's physical and emotional authenticity, Gandhari looks set to be much more than a conventional revenge thriller. It is a story about motherhood, loss and the terrifying strength that can emerge when there is nothing left to lose.
