Ethnic violence strained state’s financial resources: CM Manipur

Imphal, Aug 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday said the unprecedented ethnic violence that engulfed the state in May 2023 has severely strained its financial resources and adversely affected the economy.

Addressing the 79th Manipur Excise Raising Day at the Excise Headquarters Office in Lamphelpat, Imphal West, the Chief Minister appreciated the coordinated efforts of the state and Central security forces in containing the prolonged ethnic crisis. He noted that effective joint operations had helped curb the violence.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the state since the outbreak of the ethnic violence and said the government was making efforts to restore normalcy and address the difficulties arising from the crisis.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the Excise Department and ensuring effective enforcement of laws to check the illegal production, transportation and sale of liquor and other prohibited substances.

He lauded the Excise Department and other collaborating departments for collecting around Rs 29 crore in revenue for the state since March 26, 2026, in less than a year. He assured that the Excise Employees’ Association's grievances would be looked into, stressing the importance of strengthening the department.

Commissioner Finance N. Ashok Kumar said the department has played an important role in safeguarding public health and the financial health of the state government.

He added that the government remains committed to supporting the department by addressing staff needs, improving infrastructure and providing necessary policy backing.

He assured that the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister would be properly examined and addressed.

The Chief Minister also felicitated Ariha Pangambam, the first Indian to win a Gold Medal in the recently concluded 10th Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships, and Anjori Pangambam, who secured seventh position in the same event.
