Washington, Aug 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) US President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping would visit the United States in two weeks, announcing the expected trip while discussing a new White House ballroom and military complex modelled in ambition on China’s Great Hall.
Trump made the disclosure at the start of a back-to-school event in the White House Rose Garden. The President did not provide dates, an itinerary or details of his planned talks with Xi.
“We have President Xi coming in two weeks, and I was over in China two months ago, and we saw the Great Hall of China,” Trump said. “Well, now we’re going to have a Great Hall too in the United States, so it’s very important, very very important.”
Trump linked the planned White House complex to his administration’s broader construction work on the grounds. He said the project would include a ballroom and a military component.
“As you know, over there, we’re building a military complex and a ballroom that will be second to none anywhere in the world,” he said.
The President returned to the construction project after delivering remarks on education. He invited the students and families attending the event to accompany him to view the work.
“You’ll see right alongside of it the great structure that’s rising right next to the White House, and that’s gonna be the ballroom/military complex,” Trump said. “It’s incredible.”
He said the administration was also building a new heliport at the White House. According to Trump, helicopters had previously been required to land on grass, creating difficulties in wet conditions.
“We’re building a beautiful heliport, which has been asked for for many, many years,” Trump said. “The helicopter would land on wet grass, and it was bad and dangerous.”
Trump appeared eager to show the construction to the children gathered for the Rose Garden event.
“I love the sound of construction,” he said. “When I hear all that banging out there, some people say, ‘Oh, that’s too bad.’ And I say, ‘I love it.’”
The President said the workers involved in the project were “doing something great for America” and repeated that the heliport had been needed for years.
“We’re doing all the things that should have been done for years,” he said.
Trump’s announcement of Xi’s expected visit came without an accompanying statement in the material from the Chinese government or further information from the White House.
The disclosure nevertheless points to another high-level engagement between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies.
Relations between Washington and Beijing have been shaped by disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan, the South China Sea and strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. The two governments have also maintained high-level contacts to manage tensions and prevent their rivalry from escalating.
The Great Hall of the People in Beijing is China’s principal ceremonial and legislative building. Located on the western edge of Tiananmen Square, it hosts major state functions, meetings of China’s national legislature and receptions for visiting foreign leaders.
