Hassan, Aug 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) A war of words has broken out between Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Latha Kumari and Janata Dal (Secular) (JD‑S) MLA H.D. Revanna following the latter’s critical remarks about the officer’s posting and functioning in the district.
Revanna is the son of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and brother of Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Responding to Revanna’s alleged insulting remarks, Latha Kumari on Monday questioned the propriety of making what she described as “lowly” and “disgusting” comments against a government officer. “Who will respond to such lowly comments? Many officials have confided in me that they fear speaking about him. If someone is speaking about a government officer in such a lowly and disgusting manner, is it not wrong? What message will go to society?” she said, without naming Revanna.
The Deputy Commissioner said that if there were shortcomings in her functioning or if any action had been taken contrary to rules, Revanna, as an elected representative, had several legal and administrative avenues to seek redress. “If we have not done something within the framework of the rules, certainly he has the power to rectify it. Not only that, he has all the legal options as well. He is a legislator and a representative of the people. He represents a large number of people. But what message will go out in this matter?” she asked.
The exchange comes amid controversy over the reservation process for the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections in Hassan district.
Latha Kumari had earlier posted on X a cryptic message that read, “If they are not able to control you, they will start hating you.” Though she did not name Revanna, the post was seen in the context of criticism directed at her.
Revanna, while addressing the media in Hassan last Friday, had questioned the officer’s functioning and her appointment as Deputy Commissioner. “I have worked as an MLA for 30 years, and I have never seen such a Deputy Commissioner. I do not know from where they have brought her and posted her here,” he said.
He also questioned whether the Deputy Commissioner was functioning impartially and honestly across all Assembly constituencies in Hassan district.
Revanna, a senior JD‑S leader, represents Holenarasipura Assembly constituency. His family wields considerable political influence in Hassan.
The confrontation also recalls an earlier high‑profile face‑off between Revanna and senior IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri during her tenure as Hassan Deputy Commissioner from 2017 to 2019. Sindhuri had taken action against alleged illegal sand storage and mining activities, besides initiating measures against unauthorised activities involving local Panchayat representatives. Her actions reportedly led to friction with local political functionaries.
Revanna, then district in‑charge minister, had openly criticised Sindhuri’s administrative style and sought her transfer on several occasions. Sindhuri subsequently challenged the transfer issues before legal and administrative forums, including the Central Administrative Tribunal.
The latest remarks by Revanna and the response from Latha Kumari have once again brought into focus the relationship between elected representatives and senior district officials, with questions raised over the manner in which differences over administration are aired in public.
