HM Amit Shah to attend Gujarat Vidyapith's 72nd convocation ceremony in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Aug 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Gujarat on August 27 and attend the 72nd convocation ceremony of Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad as the chief guest, the university said on Monday.

The ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the historic Pranjivan Vidyarthi Bhavan on the institution's Gandhi campus. Gujarat Vidyapith has officially confirmed HM Shah's participation.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Harshad Patel said HM Shah had been invited to the ceremony and had accepted the invitation. Governor and Chancellor Acharya Devvrat will deliver the convocation address.

"A total of 900 students from 18 departments across seven faculties will receive degrees at the ceremony. They include 184 undergraduate students, 400 postgraduate students, 232 students from postgraduate programmes, 21 postgraduate diploma holders and 63 MPhil/PhD candidates. The graduating cohort comprises 441 women and 459 men. Of the 900 graduates, 559 are expected to attend the ceremony in person," the VC said.

Twelve students will be honoured with Mandir and Dhwaj medals, with the university following a selection process that considers achievements beyond academics.

According to Patel, the system is rooted in Mahatma Gandhi's concept of Nai Talim and its emphasis on the development of the "Hand, Head and Heart".

"The Mandir Medal and Dhwaj Medal are not decided merely on the basis of academic achievement," Patel said.

He explained that a committee evaluates students on their participation and performance in areas including padyatras, leadership training camps, NSS and NCC, community service, internships, fieldwork, experiential learning, student activities and sports, besides their ethical conduct and commitment to Gandhian values.

Officials said students are also assessed for research and innovation projects, literary, cultural and technical activities, leadership roles, university, state and national-level sporting activities, and other contributions.

The convocation will continue Gujarat Vidyapith's tradition of hosting prominent national figures. President Droupadi Murmu attended the 71st convocation last year as the chief guest.

Former Presidents Dr Rajendra Prasad, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Dr Zakir Husain, Giani Zail Singh and Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, former President Pranab Mukherjee and the Dalai Lama were among the prominent personalities associated with the institution's convocation ceremonies.

Patel said the ceremony has traditionally been linked to the institution's October 18 foundation day, but the date has not always been fixed.

"Whenever the convenience of the chief guest permitted, the convocation ceremony was organised according to the convenience of the guest," he said, citing the visits of Pranab Mukherjee and Wipro chairman Azim Premji as examples.

He said Gujarat Vidyapith had, over the past three years, begun observing its foundation day separately while using the convocation to showcase different dimensions of the university's work.

The 2024 convocation was held on Guru Purnima, while last year's ceremony was scheduled in accordance with President Murmu's Gujarat visit.

The university, founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, said trustees, members of its governing bodies, vice-chancellors of various universities, invited officials, staff, representatives of the Graduates' Association and students will attend the ceremony.
