Chennai, Aug 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Sunday, even as a fresh low-pressure area has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai had earlier identified a feeble trough in the lower atmospheric levels off the Tamil Nadu coast. The weather system is expected to bring moderate rainfall to the Western Ghats districts and several northern and coastal districts of the state.
On Sunday, moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is likely at one or two places in the Western Ghats districts. Similar weather conditions have been forecast for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts, besides neighbouring Puducherry.
One or two places in the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal region are also likely to receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures.
Sudden spells of rain and strong winds could temporarily disrupt traffic and affect outdoor activities in some areas.
Meanwhile, the IMD confirmed the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal.
Under its influence, rough sea conditions are expected to prevail along the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh until Monday.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal, Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts during this period. Those already at sea have been asked to exercise caution and return to safer areas, depending on local advisories. However, weather officials said the newly formed low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal was unlikely to have any direct impact on Tamil Nadu.
The rainfall forecast for the state is mainly associated with the feeble trough prevailing near the Tamil Nadu coast and local atmospheric conditions. The weather department is continuing to monitor both systems and will issue further advisories if there is any significant change in their intensity or movement.
