Anand, Aug 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Against the backdrop of the spurious liquor tragedy in the Bhavnagar district, the Gujarat Police's State Monitoring Cell (SMC) has seized Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer worth Rs 19.63 lakh during a raid in Anand district, with the total value of the seized liquor and other material estimated at Rs 34.69 lakh.
The raid was carried out on Sunday on the Bhalaj-Anand Road near the Ahmedabad Expressway, beyond the Appu Way Bridge, after the Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Malik directed the SMC to take legal action against illegal liquor and gambling activities across the state.
Acting on the instructions, a team led by SMC Police Inspector B.H. Rathod conducted the operation within the jurisdiction of Anand Rural Police Station. Police seized around 150 boxes of Indian-made liquor and beer containing 7,187 bottles.
The liquor was valued at Rs 19,63,151, while the total value of all seized material was put at Rs 34,69,621. One person was arrested during the raid, while five others have been named as wanted accused.
The arrested suspect was identified as Naran alias Atul Chauhan, a resident of Kanpur village in Surendranagar district's Sayla taluka.
The five wanted accused include Bhavesh Matasuriya, also of Kanpur village, behind the government dairy in Sayla taluka.
Police have also named the owner of the truck and three other persons allegedly involved in loading and sending the liquor consignment from Nashik.
An offence was registered at Anand Rural Police Station under Sections 65(A)(E), 81, 83, 98(2) and 116(B) of the Gujarat Prohibition Act, along with Sections 111(2)(B) and 111(3)(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The seizure comes as authorities have intensified action against illegal liquor networks following the spurious liquor incident, in which 13 people have died, and several others were hospitalised after consuming methanol-laced liquor.
The State Monitoring Cell is separately investigating that case, with a wider network of accused being traced.
Gujarat is a prohibition state where the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol are prohibited, except under specified legal permissions.
The latest operation also highlights the continued focus of enforcement agencies on tracing and disrupting the movement of illicit liquor consignments into and within the state.
