Sharing the first look, Netflix India wrote, “The blindfold will soon be lifted from everyone's eyes. Gandhari is on her way. Watch Gandhari, out 3 Sept, on Netflix.” The line immediately draws attention to the title's connection with the Mahabharata character Gandhari, who famously chose to blindfold herself. In this modern thriller, however, that imagery appears to take on a much more contemporary meaning.
Taapsee Pannu features prominently in the first look, signalling another intense and physically charged performance from the actor. While the makers are keeping much of the plot under wraps, the imagery and title point towards a character caught in circumstances where truth can no longer remain hidden. The idea of a blindfold being lifted hints at revelations that could dramatically change the course of the story.
The film brings together an interesting ensemble around Pannu, including Ishwak Singh, Mita Vashisht, Swastika Mukherjee, Chhaya Kadam and Jatin Sarna. Their presence adds to the intrigue around Gandhari, particularly since Netflix has chosen to reveal the release date alongside a first look rather than giving away too much of the narrative.
Behind the camera, Gandhari brings together writer-producer Kanika Dhillon and filmmaker Devashish Makhija, with Dhillon also producing the project. The film reunites Dhillon with Taapsee, following their previous collaborations, and promises to explore the more emotional and ferocious side of the action-thriller genre.
The reference to Gandhari is particularly intriguing because the legendary character's blindfold has always carried multiple interpretations — sacrifice, resistance, loyalty and a conscious refusal to see. Netflix's statement about removing the blindfold suggests that the new film could turn that symbolism on its head, placing the focus on a woman who is no longer willing to remain in the dark.
For Taapsee, the project adds another gritty title to her growing list of performances in stories that combine emotional stakes with high-intensity drama. If the first look is anything to go by, Gandhari is not positioning its central character as a conventional action hero. Instead, the film appears to be building its action around something far more personal — the kind of anger that comes from having something precious to protect.
With September 3 now locked, the countdown has officially begun. And considering Netflix's cryptic promise that the blindfold is about to come off, Gandhari could have plenty of secrets waiting to be uncovered when Taapsee Pannu's latest thriller arrives on the platform.
