Aizawl, Aug 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Mizoram Police has arrested two persons, 18 days after the alleged murder of a 15-year-old girl in Mizoram’s Lunglei district, police said on Friday.
The two arrested men have been identified as Denghmingthanga, 20, and Lalneihkima, 34.
A police official said that the victim and the accused are residents of Mualthuam North village, and one of the accused, Denghmingthanga, is reportedly the cousin of the girl.
The body of the girl was found in bushes inside the premises of a government-run school in Mualthuam North village on August 5, two days after the teenager went missing from her home on August 3.
Police also recovered two knives from the vicinity of the school premises.
The Mizoram Police immediately registered a case at the Lunglei police station and constituted a Special Investigation Team, headed by the Lunglei Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), to probe the alleged killing.
The SIT officials interrogated the arrested duo as well as several other persons in connection with the murder. The two accused had been summoned multiple times for questioning before they were arrested.
According to an official, the SIT closely analysed evidence raising suspicion against the duo, including their mobile phone usage patterns and forensic evidence gathered during the investigation.
“After extensive questioning and examination of the evidence, both the arrested youths confessed to the crime before the SIT,” the official said.
The duo were produced before a local court, which subsequently remanded them in judicial custody. The SIT is yet to ascertain the details and circumstances surrounding the girl's murder. Further details have not been disclosed at this stage as they could hamper the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings, the official said.
The case remains under investigation, and the SIT is continuing to examine the evidence and pursue related leads to establish the circumstances and motive behind the alleged killing.
Police also appealed to the public to cooperate with the investigation and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
