Robbery at mattress store in Kolkata, Rs 1.30 crore taken away at gunpoint

Kolkata, Aug 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) A businessman in Kolkata's Posta area was robbed of Rs 1.30 crore at gunpoint, police said on Thursday.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday night, created a stir in the area.

Upon receiving the news, high-ranking police officers rushed to the spot. Detectives from Lalbazar (Kolkata Police headquarters) also went to the spot to investigate the incident.

An official from Lalbazar said that the owner and employees of the mattress store where the robbery took place are being questioned. Police officers are even trying to track down the accused by examining the CCTV footage of the area.

Police said the incident took place on Cotton Street in the Posta area.

The mattress shop workers alleged that four young men, with their faces covered with cloth, suddenly appeared at the mattress store, where over Rs 1 crore had come and was kept in a chest. According to the workers, the robbers held firearms to the heads of the owner and employees, took out the money, filled it in a bag and fled.

While leaving, they threatened to shoot and warned the mattress owner and employees to keep their mouths shut.

However, as the robbers fled, the employees raised an alarm, and several area residents chased them. They even managed to catch one, but the others managed to free him, and all escaped.

The owner of the store claimed that the robbers came to do a recce in the afternoon and came again at night to commit the robbery.

An investigation has been launched to find out if there is any inside involvement in the robbery.

"Search is on for the robbers. Preliminary investigation reveals that someone close to the store could be behind this, as the robbers knew that cash would come to the store. Store employees are being questioned. Investigation is on," a senior Kolkata Police official said.
