Drug smuggling accused wrestler arrested after prolonged manhunt

New Delhi, Aug 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) A national level wrestler, who was declared as proclaimed offender in a drug smuggling case of Jharkhand, has been arrested by Delhi Police after a prolonged manhunt, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused, Amit Sheoran, 31, a resident of Haryana's Rohtak, was declared a proclaimed offender since December 6, 2023, and a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him at Dhurwa Police Station (PS) (Tupudana) in Ranchi.

The Delhi Police's NR-II/Crime Branch team arrested Sheoran, a statement said.

On April 20, 2023, the police officials of PS Dhurwa (Tupudana) in Ranchi apprehended a drug supplier, identified as Rajesh Nag, a resident of the state's Khunti district and recovered 492 grams of opium from his possession.

During interrogation, Nag disclosed that he used to cultivate opium and his supply is specifically dedicated to the wrestlers of north India. He named two accused, Ranjeet and Amit Sheoran, who received the drug from him.

Ranjeet and Sheoran were arrested in an NDPS case by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police in case FIR No. 96/23 of PS Crime Branch. Accordingly, FIR No.116/23, U/s 17(B)/18/22/25/29 NDPS Act, at PS Dhurwa (Tupudana), Jharkhand was registered.

Acting on specific direction, the NR-II Unit, Crime Branch launched a focused crackdown against criminals declared proclaimed offenders in heinous offences, including NDPS cases, by intensifying technical surveillance, strengthening its human intelligence network and conducting sustained field operations to identify and neutralise its active operatives.

Accordingly, a dedicated team led by Inspector Pardeep Kumar, comprising SIs Satender Dahiya, Yogesh Dahiya, and Pradeep Godara, ASI Praveen Dahiya, HCs Pardeep Sheokand, Siddharth Dhaka, Ashwani Dahiya, Sohit Dahiya, Pradeep Tomar, and Ajay Pal, under the supervision of ACP/NR-II, Girish Kaushik, and under the close supervision of DCP, Crime Branch, Chandra Kumar Singh, was constituted for the operation.

During the operation, HC Ashwini Dahiya developed a credible human intelligence input regarding the movement of proclaimed Sheoran, wanted in an NDPS case of PS Dhurwa (Tupudana), Ranchi, in FIR No. 116/23. The documents related to his proclaimed offender declaration were collected from the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, SI Vivek Kumar Mahato. The input was further corroborated and technically developed by SI Godara and HC Ashwini Dahiya through sustained technical surveillance.

Acting on the basis of specific intelligence and technical surveillance, on August 18, 2026, it was learnt that Sheoran, wanted in FIR No. 116/2023, at Bawana Police Station, would be coming in the Ranibagh-Pitampura area in Delhi to meet one of his relatives and would come to the capital's Madhuban Chowk Metro station.

A joint team comprising HCs Ashwini Dahiya, Sohit Dahiya, Ajay Pal, Dhaka and Sheokand, along with SI Mahato and his staff of PS Dhurwa (Tupudana) was constituted, and a strategic trap was laid near the metro station.

At about 10:00 pm, the suspect was located going towards the metro station and upon positive identification by SI Mahato, Sheoran was successfully apprehended and handed over to the investigating officer of the Jharkhand case.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he had studied up to Class 12. Presently unemployed, he occasionally assisted his father, who is a farmer.

Having started wrestling at the age of 14 in his village 'akhada', Sheoran joined the Mehar Singh Akahada in Rohtak at 17 years of age. Thereafter, he joined Chhartarpal Stadium.

According to the police, the accused revealed that he observed many wrestlers taking opium to increase their working hours and practice sessions. Following this, he came into contact with Ranjeet, who supplied opium to various Akhadas in Delhi and other states.

Sheoran participated in several state and national-level wrestling competitions and even secured the third position in the National Cadet wrestling competition held in 2013 at Kanyakumari.

He wanted to join Indian Railways but soon found himself entangled in criminal cases. Soon after, he started working as a bouncer in bars and pubs at the capital's Subhash Place. Meanwhile, Ranjeet lured him to work as a drug supplier with the promise to earn quick and easy money.

The accused then visited Ranchi to get opium from Rajesh Nag and started smuggling the drug from there and supplying the same to wrestlers practising in Haryana and Delhi. He was arrested in an NDPS case in Delhi, and then his supplier Nag was also arrested in Jharkhand.

Sheoran had applied for bail in a sessions court and the Jharkhand High Court, but these were dismissed.

Further, investigators have found that Sheoran was previously involved in six other criminal cases.
