Syria condemns Israeli airstrikes on military airport in Idlib

Damascus, Aug 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Syria on Tuesday strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airport in the northwestern province of Idlib, calling the attack a violation of the country's sovereignty and a dangerous escalation threatening regional security and stability.

In a statement, Syria's foreign affairs authority said the strikes constituted "an unjustified act of aggression" and a "flagrant violation" of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It said continued Israeli attacks since the fall of the former government on December 8, 2024, were undermining efforts by the new Syrian authorities to consolidate stability and avoid escalation, Xinhua News Agency reported.

It held Israel responsible for the escalation and called on the international community and the UN Security Council to condemn the attack and take a firm stance against what it described as repeated Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty.

The statement came hours after Syrian state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV reported, citing a military source, that Israeli warplanes had carried out eight airstrikes on the runway of the Abu al-Duhur military airport in the eastern countryside of Idlib early Tuesday.

The strikes caused material damage to the airport's infrastructure, with no casualties reported, according to the military source.

There was no immediate comment from Israel on the strikes.

The Abu al-Duhur military airport is located near the town of Abu al-Duhur, about 27 km east of Saraqeb. It is situated near routes linking parts of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama provinces, with areas extending toward Syria's central desert.

Last week, an Israeli military patrol advanced into the Abu Qbeis Hill area in the countryside of Syria's southwestern Quneitra province, Syrian state media reported.

The patrol consisted of two tanks and several military vehicles carrying soldiers, state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV reported.

The latest incursion came a day after an Israeli force entered the village of Eastern Samadaniyah in Quneitra with two tanks and several military vehicles carrying soldiers, according to the report.
