Kolkata, Aug 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) Eggs were thrown at Upasana Chowdhury, the Trinamool Congress youth leader affiliated to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, during a flag hoisting event on Saturday.
The incident took place at the Asutosh College in Kolkata.
The Trinamool leader vented her anger over 'egg therapy' and alleged that outsiders entered the college to disrupt their event in the presence of the police.
Upasana alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members attacked her.
On Saturday morning, the Trinamool youth leader and others went to Asutosh College in Kolkata. She is also the President of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). They went to Asutosh College to hoist the national flag. However, they were prevented from entering the campus because they did not have any college identity cards.
The police officers in charge of security forbade them from gathering in front of the college which led to simmering tension in the area.
During that time, eggs were thrown at the Trinamool leader Upasana Chowdhury over her head and body.
The tension increased several times after that incident.
Upasana took to Facebook Live and protested strongly.
She alleged that there were outsiders inside the college.
"The police did not tell them (Trinamool Congress leaders) anything, they did not even check their identity cards! But when we went to the college to hoist the national flag, we were branded as 'outsiders'. Eggs were thrown by the BJP and ABVP members," Upasana said.
She also accused the police of aiding the attackers and not taking any action.
However, BJP and ABVP have denied this allegation.
An ABVP member at the Asutosh College said, "Upasana Chowdhury has been the victim of public anger. Those who are not happy with Trinamool Congress vented their anger at them."
After the BJP government came to power in the state following the recent West Bengal Assembly election, a large number of Trinamool Congress leaders, former Ministers and Councillors were arrested by the police on several charges, including extortion, assault, molestation and intimidation.
In most of the cases, angry people threw eggs on the Trinamool Congress leaders while they were being escorted by the police.
In several instances, people chanted "thieves" slogan while throwing eggs over the arrested Trinamool Congress leaders.
The incident of throwing eggs have been described as 'egg therapy' by the protesters.
