Surat/Gandhinagar, Aug 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Surat-based textile trader accused of cheating three businessmen of Rs 23.50 lakh has been arrested by the city Crime Branch, seven days after one of the victims approached Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi in Gandhinagar seeking action.
Mohammad Zakiriya Gulam Mohammad Kapadia, proprietor of Zaid Textiles, had allegedly been evading arrest for around one-and-a-half years after a complaint was registered against him at Salabatpura Police Station.
The case relates to the alleged purchase of grey yarn worth Rs 23.50 lakh from three traders without making payment.
According to the complaint, Kapadia began trading with Manishkumar Patel of Jai Ambika Textiles, Jay Patel of Dev Tex and Rohit Patel of Jai Sadhima Textiles in 2017.
The traders, who operated from Hari Om Industrial Society-2 in Bamroli, said the accused initially made payments on time and gained their confidence.
He later allegedly purchased large quantities of grey yarn on credit but failed to clear the dues.
The alleged outstanding amounts were Rs 13 lakh owed to Patel, Rs 3.80 lakh to Jay Patel and Rs 6.46 lakh to Rohit Patel. Cheques issued towards payment were allegedly dishonoured by the bank.
The traders also alleged that they were threatened when they demanded their money.
Legal proceedings were initiated after the complaint was registered, but Kapadia allegedly changed his shop address and repeatedly shifted locations to avoid arrest.
He also remained absent during court proceedings, according to the complaint.
With the accused continuing to evade arrest, Manishkumar Patel met Sanghavi during a visitors’ day at his Gandhinagar office and submitted a representation.
Sanghavi subsequently directed the Surat Crime Branch to take immediate and strict action. Following the directions, DCP Crime Branch B.P. Rojia and his team intensified their investigation and arrested Kapadia within seven days.
He was produced before a court and sent to jail. Patel said the intervention had helped bring a long-pending matter forward.
“We were fighting a legal battle, but after going to Gandhinagar and making a representation to Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the way he immediately issued strict directions and activated the Crime Branch made our visit to Gandhinagar completely fruitful,” he said.
“We have received justice through the prompt action of the Deputy Chief Minister and Surat Police. I also request other traders in the textile sector not to be afraid and to approach the police and government. The authorities are ready to provide full support and cooperation,” Patel added.
