Chennai, Aug 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) has launched a dedicated Anti‑Corruption Special Cell to receive public complaints against police personnel allegedly demanding bribes for carrying out official duties, as part of efforts to improve transparency and strengthen public confidence in the force.
Announcing the initiative on Tuesday, GCP Commissioner A. Amalraj said the special cell would provide citizens with a direct channel to report instances of corruption involving police personnel, irrespective of rank.
Members of the public who face demands for bribes from police personnel can contact the Anti‑Corruption Special Cell on 78717‑23000. Complaints can be lodged either by calling the number directly or by sending details through WhatsApp. Police assured that the identity and other details of complainants would be kept strictly confidential to ensure that people could report instances of corruption without fear.
According to the Commissioner, an overwhelming majority of police personnel, from constables to senior officers, discharge their responsibilities honestly and do not seek illegal gratification. However, misconduct by a small section of personnel could damage the reputation of the entire force and undermine the trust that the police enjoy among the public.
The new cell has therefore been established to identify such instances and ensure swift action whenever credible complaints are received. The Greater Chennai Police said every piece of information or complaint received through the special cell would be examined thoroughly. Appropriate and immediate action would be initiated against personnel if allegations of bribery were established during the inquiry.
The initiative is also aimed at encouraging citizens to come forward with information rather than yielding to demands for illegal payments while approaching police stations or personnel for services. Amalraj appealed to the public not to offer money or other inducements to police personnel for services that they are duty‑bound to provide.
He stressed that policing is essentially a public service and that citizens should not have to make any payment outside officially prescribed charges, wherever applicable, to get their legitimate work done. The Commissioner said public cooperation would be crucial to the success of the initiative and urged citizens to report demands for bribes promptly.
The police hope the dedicated mechanism will act as a deterrent against corruption, facilitate quicker action on complaints and reinforce accountability across the Greater Chennai Police.
