'Har Ghar Tiranga': Delhi Metro unveils special train wrapped in tricolour theme

New Delhi, Aug 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi Metro on Sunday joined the week-long 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign by unveiling of a special train on the Yellow Line wrapped in the tricolour theme, an official of the Union Ministry of Culture said.

The Ministry shared a social media post of Delhi Metro which said, "A special Metro train wrapped with the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' theme celebrating the spirit of independence was unveiled today by Delhi Metro as part of the week-long activities which are being organised to celebrate the 80th Independence Day of India. The train is operational on the Delhi Metro network's Yellow Line."

"The 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign this year celebrates the momentous occasion of the 150th year of India's national song 'Vande Mataram'. All citizens are being encouraged to proudly hoist the National Flag and participate in the digital events," the post on social media platform X said.

In another development, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that it has emerged ahead of some of the world's most established metro systems — including the Hong Kong Metro, Paris Metro and New York Subway -- in train punctuality and reliability, reaffirming its position among the finest urban rail networks globally.

Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of DMRC's Corporate Communications, said this achievement carries added significance given DMRC's stringent benchmark for operational performance.

"While many metro systems classify a delay only after several minutes, Delhi Metro records a delay if a train arrives at destination station more than 59 seconds behind schedule," Dayal added.

Train punctuality which was 98.27 per cent in 2003 climbed to 99.64 per cent in 2005, enabling DMRC to join the elite league of metro systems achieving more than 99 per cent of punctuality within just two years of inception, he said.

Thereafter, DMRC has constantly achieved 99.9 per cent train punctuality, year after year. Train headway has reduced from seven minutes in the early years to just 2 minutes 18 seconds on the busiest corridors, the DMRC said in a statement.

"Generally, as the network and fleet length increases along with maintenance issues with passage of time, the punctuality and reliability of the Metro system is impacted adversely. However, in its 23 years of operations so far, Delhi Metro has defied this norm by maintaining a punctuality which stands at 99.95 per cent in 2026," it added.

"Punctuality and reliability go hand in hand. DMRC has achieved a Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF) of 2.72 million car-kilometres, a key indicator that measures the average distance travelled by Metro trains before a service affecting failure occurs," it said.

Through international benchmarking by the Community of Metros (COMET) -- a consortium of 45 leading metro systems worldwide -- in terms of reliability, Delhi Metro has consistently ranked among the top five systems globally (based on the two-minute delay criterion).

In addition, DMRC also operates India's largest driverless metro network with about 29 per cent of the network running under Unattended Train Operation (UTO), the statement said.

"Line 7 or the Pink Line, spanning 71.55 km with 45 stations, is the world's longest driverless metro line and one of the longest circular metro lines globally. It interchanges with every Delhi Metro corridor except a small portion of Grey Line," it said.

From its modest beginning on December 25, 2002 — an 8.4 km corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari with just six stations -- Delhi Metro now operates India's largest metro rail network spanning 416.5 km across 303 stations on 12 lines, with 31 interchange stations connecting Delhi and the National Capital Region.

Daily ridership has surged from nearly 82,000 passengers in its first year to a record single-day patronage of more than 81 lakh passenger journeys, the statement said.
