
Lucknow, Aug 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a postal office assistant in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao for taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a loan applicant under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), an official said.
The office assistant was posted at Bighapur Post Office in Unnao, the CBI said in a statement.
The CBI registered the case immediately on Friday based on a complaint alleging that the complainant had availed a loan of Rs 10,00,000 from Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank in Bhagwant Nagar, under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) scheme to run/open a bakery and the subsidy of Rs 3,49,500 for this loan had been credited in the bank.
It was alleged that the accused office assistant demanded Rs 35,000 from the complainant as a bribe for verification of his unit for the loan subsidy.
On receiving a complaint, the CBI laid a trap on Saturday and the accused was apprehended red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the loan applicant.
After the arrest, a Special CBI Court in Lucknow would decide his custody-related matters.
In a separate case in Karnataka, two employees of the postal department were arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged misappropriation of around Rs 1.3 crore from the Post Office Savings Accounts of 44 account holders.
The two accused committed the fraud at Saragur Post Office in Mysuru district where they were working as a Postal Assistant and a Postman, the CBI said.
They were arrested following an investigation into allegations of criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
According to the CBI, a case was registered in March 2026 based on a written complaint received from the Postal Department regarding the alleged fraud.
