Guwahati, July 28 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday defended the state government's tough policing policy in the Assembly, asserting that law enforcement agencies must be allowed to take stringent action against criminals, including cyber offenders, to maintain law and order.
Participating in a discussion in the House, Hazarika criticised the Opposition for questioning police action against accused persons while simultaneously demanding stronger measures to curb crime.
"Whenever the police adopt strict measures against criminals, the Opposition raises objections. Why should anyone oppose firm action against offenders?" the minister said.
He alleged that several criminals have attacked police personnel and escaped from custody during operations, making it necessary for the force to act decisively against those involved in serious offences.
"Many criminals assault police personnel and flee. When the police try to teach such offenders a lesson, the Opposition starts criticising the action," Hazarika said.
The minister maintained that the state government remains committed to ensuring public safety and would continue extending full support to the police in their fight against organised crime.
Highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime, Hazarika announced that the Assam government would now adopt a tougher approach against cyber criminals as well.
He said cyber fraud has emerged as a major challenge, with increasing instances of online financial scams and digital crimes affecting people across the state.
"From now onwards, cyber criminals will also face stringent action in Assam. Like drug traffickers, cyber offenders too must face severe punishment," the minister said.
Hazarika's remarks come as the Assam government has intensified its crackdown on various forms of organised crime, particularly narcotics trafficking, illegal activities and financial fraud.
The state police have in recent years conducted a series of operations against drug syndicates, with the government repeatedly asserting a zero-tolerance policy towards crime.
The minister reiterated that strict enforcement of the law was essential to deter criminals and ensure the safety of citizens, adding that no distinction would be made between conventional criminals and those committing offences through digital platforms.
