Medical interns and students who participated in Abhishek Banerjee’s Sebaashray health camps to be questioned

Kolkata, July 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) The medical interns and medical students who participated in the free Sebaashray health camps organised by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee within his Diamond Harbour constituency during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led regime in West Bengal, will now be questioned by the investigating officials of the state health department and also by the sleuths of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, last week, announced on the floor of the West Bengal Assembly that the parallel investigation in the alleged gross irregularities in arrangement of the free Sebaashray health camps will be conducted by both the CID and the West Bengal Police.

“They would like to know from the medical interns and medical students whether they participated in the Sebaashray health camps voluntarily or whether they were under some kind of pressure either from their higher authorities or any political leader to do so.

"If it is proved that some of them participated in the said health camps voluntarily, then the state education department might caution them and might also seek an undertaking from them that they will not participate in any such private health camps in future till they get their licence as qualified doctors,” said a health department official.

However, he added, if it is proved that the medical interns and students had to succumb to some kind of pressure, be it from their higher authorities or any political person, the case will be referred to the police for actions as per legal norms.

At the same time, the state health department will enquire if they participated in these free camps independently or under supervision of any senior and qualified doctors and whether they had any idea of where the medicines and medical equipment used in the health camps were sourced from.

“In case, the medical interns and medical students were forced to operate independently in absence of supervision of any qualified person, then it is one of the dangerous practices as far as medical ethics are concerned. The organisers in these camps have not only played with the patients but also the future of the medical students and interns,” the state health department official said.

On July 25, while delivering his statement on the free Sebaashray health camps on the floor of the West Bengal Assembly on the last day of the extended Budget Session of the house, CM Adhikari displayed photographs of patients who allegedly lost their hands or legs after receiving treatment at the camps.

He also read out a letter purportedly written by a doctor alleging corruption and irregularities in the functioning of the free health camps during the previous regime.

Without naming Abhishek Banerjee directly, the Chief Minister also said that once the charges would be proved, the “mastermind nephew” will be behind bars and would never come out.
