Trinamool leader Asit Majumdar arrested on way to attend Mamata Banerjee’s July 21 rally

Kolkata, July 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Trinamool Congress leader and former MLA Asit Majumdar was arrested by police on Tuesday while on his way to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's July 21 rally in Kolkata.

The former MLA of Chunchura Assembly constituency and president of the Hooghly district committee of Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Trinamool, has been taken to the police station. The reason for the arrest is not yet known.

However, the party alleged that the police stopped the leader as he was going to Kolkata with party workers and supporters to attend the Martyrs' Day rally.

The leader was preparing to go to Mamata's rally from Hooghly on Tuesday morning. At that time, the police arrived at his house. He was taken to the police station. He was allegedly detained for a long time. Later, he was arrested. However, the police did not disclose the reason for the arrest.

It is worth noting that on May 30, former Trinamool Congress MLA Asit Majumdar and party workers blocked the road in Hooghly's Chinsurah to protest against the allegations of harassment of party MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Asit Majumdar was leading the protest programme. The police reached the spot to disperse the protest. But they were accused of obstructing the police in their work. They were also accused of pushing the policemen who were on duty. The Chinsurah police station registered a suo motu case against Asit Majumdar in that incident. About 10 people, including Asit Majumdar, were arrested. Then they got bail. This time, Asit Majumdar was arrested again. It is not clear whether he was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the previous incident.

Kolkata Police have been on heightened alert since Tuesday morning due to three concurrent July 21 Martyrs’ Day rallies occurring in close proximity to each other. These events are being organised to honour the memory of 13 Youth Congress workers who lost their lives in police firing during a protest rally on this day in 1993, when the Left Front regime was in power, with the late Jyoti Basu serving as Chief Minister.

Till last year, there used to be one Martyrs’ Day rally organised by the previous ruling party, Trinamool Congress.

However, following changes in opposition politics in West Bengal over the last three months since the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landslide victory in the recently concluded Assembly polls, there will be three parallel Martyrs’ Day rallies this time.
