Patna, July 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The issue of Bihar's deteriorating school infrastructure dominated proceedings on the second day of the Monsoon Session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, with the Opposition accusing the government of neglecting basic educational facilities.
Responding to the criticism, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary assured the House that the NDA government would review the matter and resolve pending land-related issues for schools within six months.
RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet alleged that nearly 40 per cent of government school buildings in Bihar are either dilapidated or have collapsed, forcing many schools to function from neighbouring villages or in severely inadequate facilities.
He questioned whether the Education Department had conducted a comprehensive survey to identify schools whose buildings have collapsed, Panchayats lacking functional school buildings, and schools where students are compelled to study under trees despite land being available.
Sarvjeet urged the government to prioritise the reconstruction of damaged schools and improve educational infrastructure across the state.
The RJD legislator also raised concerns over the quality of education, claiming that many students in Classes 3 to 6 are unable to read even the basic English alphabet.
He argued that the problem extends beyond teacher training.
“If a school with only two classrooms has to accommodate nearly a thousand students, quality education is impossible,” he said.
Sarvjeet suggested convening a meeting of all MLAs in the Central Hall of the Assembly to discuss practical solutions for improving education, particularly for children from economically weaker families.
Replying to the debate, Chief Minister Choudhary acknowledged the concerns and explained that the expansion of schools had begun under the initiative of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who aimed to establish a high school in every panchayat.
He said that during implementation, land could not be arranged for nearly 600–700 schools, prompting the government to begin classes wherever at least two rooms were available so that students would not be deprived of education.
The Chief Minister assured the House that the government will conduct a fresh review of the situation and land-related issues affecting schools without permanent campuses will be resolved.
He further said that the necessary land for such schools will be made available within six months, after which construction and other required works will be initiated promptly.
