Nearly 55.5 crore users onboarded on UPI by June; FY26 transactions cross 24,161 crore: Centre

New Delhi, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Nearly 55.49 crore users had been onboarded on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform as of June 2026, while UPI processed a record 24,161.69 crore transactions worth Rs 314.23 lakh crore during FY2025-26, the Centre informed Parliament on Monday.

The transaction volume has risen steadily over the past five financial years. UPI processed 4,595.61 crore transactions worth Rs 84.16 lakh crore in FY2021-22, followed by 8,371.44 crore transactions valued at Rs 139.15 lakh crore in FY2022-23, the minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

In FY2023-24, transaction volume increased to 13,112.95 crore with a value of Rs 199.95 lakh crore, while FY2024-25 saw 18,586.60 crore transactions worth Rs 260.56 lakh crore.

The minister said NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI established in April 2020, is expanding India's digital payment ecosystem globally by partnering with foreign entities to deploy platforms such as UPI and the RuPay card scheme in international markets.

These partnerships enable Indian tourists and the Indian diaspora to make seamless cross-border payments while helping partner countries develop UPI-like real-time payment systems and domestic card payment infrastructure similar to RuPay.

The government, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and NPCI have also introduced several measures to strengthen the security and transparency of UPI transactions.

These include risk-based transaction limits to curb fraudulent transactions, safeguards against unauthorised mobile number changes and misuse of SMS-based authentication, along with enhanced security requirements for UPI applications.

NPCI has also issued the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework, mandating advanced security controls to improve the safety and resilience of the UPI ecosystem.

The minister further informed the House that UPI has been linked with the payment systems of several countries to facilitate both person-to-person remittances and person-to-merchant transactions, further expanding the global footprint of India's flagship digital payments platform.
