Indore, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) A tractor march by Karni Sena Parivar and farmers demanding four times the compensation for land acquired for the Indore Western Ring Road project was stopped by the police and administration at Shipra Square on Monday, leading to a tense confrontation and allegations of the use of force.
The protesters alleged that water cannons were used and tear gas shells fired to halt the march to Bhopal, resulting in injuries to seven farmers. Following the action, the farmers staged a sit-in at Barlai Jagir.
Rishiraj Singh Sisodia, Indore district president of Karni Sena Parivar, said farmers have been seeking a resolution for three years. He told reporters that around 50 memoranda had been submitted, yet no solution was reached.
He said the march was peaceful and aimed at submitting demands to the Chief Minister in Bhopal. He added that in a democratic system, farmers have the right to peacefully voice their demands, alleging that tear gas was fired, water cannons deployed and some farmers detained.
According to Sisodia, 991 farmers from 39 villages are affected by the Greater Ring Road project, which covers about 4,442 hectares.
He claimed land in the area is valued at Rs 1 crore to Rs 3.5 crore per acre, while compensation offered ranges from Rs 18 lakh to Rs 42 lakh. He said farmers are not opposed to development but seek fair compensation.
Ravindra Kannaujia of the Karni Sena alleged that the route was blocked by dumper trucks before force was used. He said water cannons and tear gas shells were deployed against them and claimed he was injured when a tear gas shell exploded near his leg.
Farmer Ram Makwana claimed eight to ten farmers were injured, with some hospitalised. He said many fell ill due to tear gas, while others suffered injuries to legs and shoulders.
The Indore-Dewas Western Ring Road is designed to divert heavy traffic and is considered key to the 2028 Ujjain Simhastha. Farmers said they do not oppose the project but want remunerative compensation for fertile, irrigated land and warned the agitation will continue till demands are met.
Police did not immediately comment on the allegations.
