Ahmedabad, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has inspected 299 units across the city in a two-day fire safety enforcement drive launched after a fatal explosion at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in the Ramol area last week.
The blast killed 10 people, including children, and injured five others, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a wider crackdown on unauthorised firecracker-related activities.
According to the AMC, the Fire and Emergency Services Department and the zonal offices of the Estate and Town Development Department have been conducting joint inspections across the city since the incident.
The civic body said that 299 units were inspected on July 19 and 20, including 147 on Saturday and 152 on Sunday.
"Immediately after the incident on Saturday afternoon, its teams carried out overnight inspections in different parts of the city, seized illegally stored firecrackers and destroyed them. Enforcement against hazardous activities has since been intensified," officials said.
As part of the drive, the joint teams surveyed unauthorised buildings and units suspected of being used to manufacture or store firecrackers.
During Sunday's inspections, officials found that the owners of several suspicious units had locked their premises and left, indicating they were absconding.
Many establishments were found closed during the checks, but the AMC said: "Inspections would continue and legal action would be taken wherever violations, illegal activities or deficiencies in fire safety were detected."
The corporation noted that special inspections conducted on July 19 covered factories, industries, warehouses, godowns, and other hazardous units across different zones.
Of the 147 units inspected that day, 30 notices were issued for violations of fire safety norms and other non-compliance, including 23 notices to warehouses and godowns and seven to other establishments.
On July 20, the South-West Zone inspected 14 units. Three units were ordered to stop operations, no firecracker-related activity was found in 10 units, and one unit was found to possess a valid Building Use (BU) permission.
In the North-West Zone, seven units were inspected. Two had valid BU permission, while no firecracker-related activity was detected in the remaining five.
The Central Zone initiated action to seal 14 units. The West Zone inspected 14 units, finding that construction at 9 was authorised.
The remaining five units were issued notices directing them to submit documentary proof within three days and to suspend operations until then.
In the East Zone, 14 units were inspected. No firecracker-related activity was found in seven units, including one manufacturing unit that was removed.
Four units produced proof of authorised construction, while two units were found to have unauthorised construction and were instructed to submit supporting documents within three days and remain closed in the meantime.
The South Zone inspected 18 units. Twelve were found to be engaged in activities unrelated to firecrackers; two had authorised construction; and four units were sealed or ordered to cease operations.
In the North Zone, 37 units were inspected. Sixteen were found to be engaged in activities other than firecracker-related operations.
Of the remaining 21 units, seven were being used as warehouses, six of which had authorised construction, while one was asked to submit construction-related documents within three days and keep the premises closed until then.
Of the remaining 14 units engaged in the sale of firecrackers, two had authorised construction. Document verification and inspections at the remaining 12 units are continuing, and they have been directed not to operate until the process is completed.
"The special inspection and enforcement campaign would continue in the coming days to ensure strict compliance with fire safety regulations, curb hazardous activities and strengthen public safety," the civic body added.
