On one side, the magnificent Bharat Mandapam recently hosted a grand celebration of cinematic ambition. In a star-studded affair, the makers of a highly anticipated magnum opus based on the Ramayana held an exclusive preview event. The air there was thick with artistic vision and high-profile promises, as this multi-crore spectacle gears up to take Indian mythology to a global audience. At its core, it is a beautiful tribute to an epic that has, for millennia, taught generations about Dharma, righteousness, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
Yet, as echoes of this epic resonate through the air-conditioned halls of Pragati Maidan, another deeply human story has reached a critical tipping point just a short drive away at Jantar Mantar. For the past three weeks, climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike. His quiet battle alongside thousands of students and parents is not for cinematic glory, but for the integrity of the nation’s educational system, seeking accountability and reform following the recent controversies surrounding the NEET-UG examinations.
This morning, amidst deteriorating health, Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by the authorities to ensure his medical safety. Before leaving the protest site, he posed a simple yet haunting question to the nation, asking whether anything could be more important than the lives, well-being, and academic futures of our children. His fragile physical state stands in stark contrast to the strength of his message, shifting the focus from administrative debates to the deeply personal toll of systemic shortcomings.
This juxtaposition brings us to a poignant reflection on the true essence of the values we celebrate on screen. We invest vast resources, creativity, and enthusiasm into honoring the ideals of Lord Ram, mapping out global campaigns to showcase these timeless teachings. However, the real-world standard-bearers of our future—our students—have simultaneously been sitting on the pavement, fighting for the fundamental right to a fair, transparent, and clean education system.
If the central message of the Ramayana is to stand up for truth and fight against inequity, we must view the events at Jantar Mantar through that very same lens. Advocating for an uncompromised examination process and safeguarding the aspirations of millions of young minds is, in its own way, a modern pursuit of Dharma. While reading and watching the lessons of the epic is deeply inspiring, practicing them by ensuring justice and a secure future for the youth is the hallmark of a truly righteous society.
As the curtains fall on the grand cinematic previews, the very real preview of India’s future continues to seek breathing room on the steps of hospitals and protest sites. It leaves us with a compelling thought to ponder as a nation. Acknowledging our heritage is essential, but perhaps the highest tribute we can pay to our ancient ideals is to actively nurture, hear, and protect the generation that will one day carry them forward.
