Bengal: Main accused held in Rajarhat house explosion, NIA takes charge (Lead)

Kolkata, July 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Police on Saturday arrested the main accused, Mohammad Shamim alias Salim, in connection with the explosion at a house in Rajarhat last night, even as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation of the case.

According to the police, Shamim was arrested in Sodepur, North 24 Parganas district, and is being brought to the Narayanpur police station in Rajarhat. Three people, including the residents of the house, are being questioned. The owner of the house, Zulfiqar Ali, and the broker Shahenshah, who helped Shamim get a room for rent, are also being interrogated.

Late Friday night, an explosion occurred in a house in the Supari Bagan area of Dakshin Narayanpur in Rajarhat, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. One person was injured in the blast. Officers of Narayanpur police station detained two people.

On Saturday, the main accused was arrested. The bomb squad went to the scene in the morning and recovered more explosives. Later, the NIA took over the investigation. Rajarhat New Town MLA Piyush Kanodia of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited the site and spoke to residents.

During the investigation, police found that the house owner is Zulfiqar Ali. Mohammad Shamim had rented a room there through broker Shahenshah a few days ago. Police sources said a search is underway for another suspect believed to be involved.

Another tenant, Shahida Begum, said a person had rented a room from the landlord, and it was known that two men would be staying there at night.

“Two days later, on Friday, the explosion occurred. I was not at home. All the things in my house have been destroyed,” she said.

Locals claimed that fresh bombs were still stored in the house. Following this, bomb squad and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) teams arrived. The bomb squad recovered two fresh bombs after searching.

Considering the seriousness of the incident, the NIA was called in. Officials of the central agency have started collecting samples, and forensic experts are being engaged to determine the real cause and source of the explosion.

Meanwhile, MLA Piyush Kanodia, after visiting the site, assured residents of help. He said a reign of terror had been created in the area to scare people. He added that whoever had ruled there for years had destroyed the locality.

“We don’t want terrorism, we want education. We will not accept machine guns or guns being handed over to anyone. We want to hand over books and pens to the youth,” the BJP MLA said.
