Village development key to Viksit Bharat: Tripura CM

Agartala, July 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said that bringing positive changes in people’s lives is the true benchmark of development and stressed that sustained efforts must be made to improve the socio‑economic conditions of all sections of society.

He also said nearly 80 per cent of the state’s Panchayats have emerged as national front‑runners in various performance parameters, reflecting Tripura’s growing prominence in grassroots governance.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while inaugurating the state‑based Panchayat Awards 2026‑27 programme at Gram Swaraj Bhavan in AD Nagar.

Saha said Tripura has earned national recognition for its outstanding work in the Panchayat sector and credited the Panchayati Raj Department for its sustained efforts.

“We have been honoured at the national level for our achievements in the Panchayat sector. The Panchayat Department is working in the right direction, and people have immense trust and confidence in the Panchayati Raj institutions,” he said.

He emphasised that strengthening Panchayats is essential for the development of both the state and the country.

“Nearly 75 per cent of Tripura’s geographical area is rural, and around 75 per cent of the state’s population resides in villages and Panchayat areas. Therefore, their development is crucial. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently emphasised the need to make Panchayats self‑reliant and technologically empowered. As the Prime Minister has repeatedly said, a developed India by 2047 cannot be achieved without the development of villages,” Saha said.

Describing villages as the foundation of development, he said previous governments had focused largely on urban‑centric growth while neglecting rural areas.

“The real engine of development lies in villages. Rural development can be achieved only through the collective efforts of the government and the people. Today, 51 awards are being presented under different categories to recognise excellence in Panchayat governance,” he added.

Highlighting Tripura’s national achievements, Saha said Sepahijala district has been recognised as the Best District in the country, while Kanchanbari Gram Panchayat has been adjudged the Best Healthy Panchayat and Baikunthapur Village Committee has received the distinction of being the Best Women‑Friendly Panchayat at the national level.

He further said that Bijaynagar Gram Panchayat, under Mohanpur block, has won the National e‑Governance Award for the second consecutive year.

“This Panchayat has introduced the innovative ‘Boutique Panchayat’ concept, a model not seen anywhere else in the country. Through such innovations, Tripura is setting new benchmarks in grassroots governance,” he said.

Saha said Tripura has now established a distinct national identity across several sectors, adding that PM Modi has also appreciated the state’s achievements. “These awards have enhanced our reputation, but they have also increased our responsibility. We must now work even harder. Today, people across the country are recognising Tripura for its achievements. Our focus should remain on improving the quality of life of our people and strengthening the socio‑economic conditions of every section of society,” he said.

“The true measure of our success is when we can bring smiles to the faces of those at the lowest rung of society. Bringing positive changes in people’s lives is the real benchmark of development,” the Chief Minister added.

He stressed that democratic governance can succeed only through the combined efforts of the government, public representatives, officials and citizens.

“Today, nearly 80 per cent of Tripura’s Panchayats have emerged as front‑runners in various national performance indicators. The highest‑scoring Gram Panchayats, blocks and districts in the country are from Tripura. This achievement has been possible because of the coordinated efforts of administrative officials, elected representatives, government employees and the people,” Saha said.

Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman, Rural Development Department Secretary Abhishek Singh, Panchayat Department Director Prasun Dey and several senior government officials were present at the function.
