Reflecting on the controversy surrounding the film, Bokadia shared that Teesri Begum encountered multiple roadblocks during certification. "The film was made, but then we ran into issues with the Censor Board. We went for a revision, faced more problems, and then approached the High Court. The High Court judge watched the film, and after that, the matter was settled, allowing the theatrical release," he revealed. Despite the hurdles, the filmmaker said the response in cinemas was overwhelming, adding that "shows were packed."
However, Bokadia explained that the film's OTT release was delayed because exhibitors requested a three-month exclusivity window after its theatrical run. Now that Teesri Begum is finally arriving on streaming, he hopes it reaches a much wider audience. "My wish is for every family in India to watch this film; every woman should see it," he said, recalling screenings in Beawar, Jaipur, and other cities where women audiences strongly connected with the story. According to him, many viewers told him "every woman in India should watch this film" because it encourages women to become stronger, face adversity, and never see themselves as weak.
The filmmaker also confirmed that the OTT premiere was pushed back slightly. "The matter was resolved, and although the film was initially scheduled for the 13th, technical reasons pushed the release to July 18th," Bokadia said, urging audiences to give the film a chance. Calling it "a high-quality, 'KC Bokadia brand' film," he described Teesri Begum as a socially relevant story that continues his tradition of making women-centric cinema. He added that the film carries an important lesson for families, saying, "You should definitely watch it and show it to your family—to your children and daughters—to see how a small mistake can lead to such far-reaching consequences."
Asked whether Teesri Begum is fictional or inspired by real events, Bokadia revealed that the story emerged from an incident he personally witnessed. "This is based on a real incident," he said, explaining that he met a man who had three wives—a Muslim woman, a Rajput woman, and a Brahmin woman. That encounter inspired him to imagine the emotional turmoil behind their lives. He said the heart of the story lies in the third wife discovering only after marriage that her husband already had two wives. "She confronted him, asking, 'You were married; why didn't you tell me?' He replied, 'You didn't ask.' She argued, 'But it was your duty to disclose that you were married,'" Bokadia recalled, adding that in his story, it is the first wife who ultimately helps the other two women escape their abusive circumstances.
Addressing the debates surrounding the film, Bokadia insisted that Teesri Begum is not driven by any religious agenda. "I have no agenda against Hindus or Muslims; this was simply based on a specific incident," he clarified. He also revealed that portraying the Muslim character in a positive light became one of the reasons the film faced complications during its release. "There was nothing wrong with it, but the process was incredibly difficult—not just during production, but also in getting it released and past the Censor Board. Yet, I didn't give up," he said.
Written, directed, and produced by K.C. Bokadia, Teesri Begum stars Kainaat Arora, Mugdha Godse, Rachna Shyam, Supriya Karnik, and Zarina Wahab. The film follows Pooja Dixit, who unknowingly marries Babban Khan before discovering he already has two wives. Instead of remaining trapped by their circumstances, the three women come together to fight for their freedom, making Teesri Begum a drama centered on resilience, courage, and women's empowerment.
