Guwahati, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday issued an advisory urging people to remain alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several parts of the state over the next three to four days, officials said.
According to the IMD forecast, widespread rainfall activity is likely to continue across Assam under the prevailing monsoon conditions, with isolated places expected to receive heavy to very heavy showers.
The weather office has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning, raising the possibility of waterlogging in urban areas, flash floods in low-lying regions, disruption of road traffic and localised landslides in vulnerable hill districts.
The district-wise forecast indicates that several districts across western, central, upper and southern Assam, including Kamrup Metro, Kamrup (Rural), Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Dima Hasao, are likely to witness heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next few days. Some districts have also been placed under warnings for isolated spells of very heavy rainfall.
In Guwahati, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers throughout the coming week.
Light rain is expected during the day on Wednesday, while thunderstorms and rain are likely during the evening and night.
The city recorded 7.4 mm of rainfall at the airport over the past 24 hours, while the maximum and minimum temperatures were 32.9 and 26.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The ASDMA said district administrations are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and emergency response systems have been kept on alert.
The authority appealed to residents, especially those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
The disaster management authority also advised daily commuters and long-distance travellers to plan their journeys carefully, follow official weather updates and adhere to advisories issued by local authorities.
It said timely information on the evolving weather situation would be shared through the ASDMA website and its official social media platforms.
